Mission 12: "The Unholy Invasion"

The Cardassians and their allies have invaded the Federation. With key facilities sabotaged, wave after wave of Cardassian Storm Troops and Jem'Haddar are soon assaulting the city. The battle becomes desperate and the stakes are very high.

Chapter Eleven: “Survival”

Thrud felt weak but not hopeless. The Asgard Ambassador could see the strained faces of Thomas and Veronica. Hope. “I have come to a decision,” Thrud said weakly. “Diplomacy is no longer an option here. We must escape.”

The others looked at Thrud with disbelief.

“We have showed no malice and yet we have been treated with malice.” Thrud continued. “The Cardassians and their allies have showed themselves to be lower than a replicator.”

Thomas and Veronica looked confused.

Thrud did not have the energy to explain. “Before we loose any more strength, we must find a way out. I propose by overpowering a guard, gaining his or her weapon and then going from there.” Thrud blinked. “In case you did not know, before taking on the robes of a diplomat, I served in the Asgard fleet and commanded my own ship.”

Veronica was surely in a disbelief seeing the Ambassador like that. But he is still her head officer, and she will do anything that he told her to do...

Veronica looked at Thomas, and then she looked back to Thrud...

"It's better now than never. Now I think the power of my persuasion technique might be of much help... We'll wait until the guard shift changed in another hour. Then our chances are much improved of getting out of here... Ambassador, it's time to teach them a lesson!" Veronica looked at Thrud...

< One hour later >

Guards are starting to change quickly, by a moment later all left is a single guard... Looking at the prisoners...

"Now is the time" Veronica whispered...

"I don't know if it will work" Thomas said...

The guard looked in suspicion towards Veronica, he then walked towards her and still holding his weapons...

"Hey, what are you trying to do?" the guard asked in a mean tune of voice...

"Nothing, but first would you mind releasing the force field?" Veronica talked calmly, using her persuasion power...

"Ha ha ha, are you kidding me???" the guard laughed shouting...

Signs of pessimism came from the two ambassadors which prepared to use brute force if they have to...

"No I'm not, would you mind releasing the force field?" Veronica then talked again, making her persuasion power more and more powerful.

"Off Course..." the guard said easily, moving and shutting down the force field...

A sign of relief came in to Veronica and the two ambassadors with disbeliefs...

~ Only a few more things to do ~

"Now, leave your weapon there and enter the force field. No shouting..." Veronica then gently persuaded the guard...

The guard followed what she said without question... in which then, the guard entered the force field which activated again by Thomas...

"Okay now what to do?" Removing her cloak which revealed her still wearing a Padawan suit, and took the weapon...

Veronica looked the Ambassadors who seemed yet to recover from the disbelief...

"Mmm... I suggest to the Communications room first though" Veronica tried to wake them up from their shock...

Darvin could almost hear Cranwell shaking in his boots. “I know what you are thinking, but this is why we are reporters. It is always fraught with some peril.” He looked back and forth to make sure the coast was clear. “I am afraid for the Doctor and besides being an effort of mercy this is also a good story. Let’s go.”

Darvin looked to make sure Cranwell was following and then dashed across the inner courtyard toward the outer edge of the complex. The two reporters made it to the safety of the wall just as a Jem’Haddar fighter swooped down for a strafing run. The phaser discharges blasted fragments off the Lab building and kicked soil into the air.

“Record everything,” Darvin said to Cranwell.

Once the fighter had gone, Darvin crept forward along the building just inside of some tall shrubs. Once Darvin reached the end he peered around and looked back to the Hospital entrance. There, still slumped on the steps was the Vulcan Doctor.

Then a new threat came into the main courtyard as two Cardassian battle tanks entered from between the Government complex and the Communications center.

Darvin pressed himself back as far as he could and hoped those tanks didn’t have sensors.

Thomas thought for a moment he was carrying the small and very weak Asgard and had to rely on Veronica to defend them. "If we do go after the communications we must be careful of any video surveillance. We need to find a map or a willing officer to tell us where the communications room is," Thomas said starting to slowly move. Looking ahead and behind him he remembered something that might be of use.

Stopping in his tracks he turned and looked into another cell where two Jem' Hadar were starring back. “How would you two like to battle those that wrongly imprisoned you and die an honorable death?" he asked knowing of their thrust for battle. The two looked to one another before stepping forward as if called into duty. Thomas smiled and nodded to Veronica to deactivate the force field.

"We have no weapons for you, but fight and die well," both Jem' Hadar bowed their heads slightly before stepping into the center of the holding area and looking around. "Move..," Thomas said quickly sending the trio off at a jog, "Those two will serve as a distraction. Who said animalistic instincts never helped in diplomacy?" As the trio ran an alarm began to sound and Thomas knew the Jem' Hadar had been seen and their absence would be noticed after those two died, for there was no other fate for them.

<Cardassians nearby>

"Our target is not far from here, and she is alone now," the first reported to the Cardassian he was assigned to. "Why is one woman so important?"

The Cardassian, a Glinn, didn't bother to turn around but replied acidly. "According to our information she is the wife of Planetary Security Chief James White."

"She is to be killed then?"

"No you fool. She is not to be harmed, at least not yet. I will approach her with two others."

"Is that wise?"

"I do not need to explain myself to you. She is one puny female, alone, frightened and injured."

"As you wish."

<Jess>

As Jess held the phaser in her hand and waited the bleeding in her side had stopped again, the pain was like now a sharp stabbing needle. It had been ten minutes since Bailey and his team had left for the hospital, several fires burned, lighting up the night sky, blocking out the stars. The noise from tanks and weapons fire was incredible, drowning out all other sounds.

She was constantly looking around, watching waiting for whatever may happen. The countless emotions around her pounded at her mind and mental shields, but she fought to keep them up. She didn't hear the slow and heavy footsteps behind her, but the light from the fires created an instant shadow.

Quickly turning, still in her crouched position, she saw a flash of light from a fire that revealed the three ugly and corded heads of Cardassian soldiers. She raised the phaser in front of her and quickly fired continuously at the officers. Although James had taught her how to shoot a phaser, she wasn't as skilled as he was, she had never killed anyone before, and although she was relieved to see two of the Cardassians fall to the ground. Her hand shaking she pointed the phaser at the third.

The third sneered as he continued to approach her. "Well done," he snarled as he came closer. "Now put that phaser down, I don’t want to hurt you. We just want you to speak to your husband for us."

He wants me to speak with James for him..... It took only a second to realize that she was to be used as a hostage against him, against her home. It took another second for her finger to press the button on the phaser that would end the Cardassians life.

As soon as he hit the ground she was on her feet running towards the portal. "Now that she knew she was a target she knew the safest place was in the shelters, but she couldn't get to one by herself, there were too many enemy troops around. Her only hope was to reach the portal and hope that someone inside could... would let her inside.

KaRae waited till C300 was finished with his tap into the tram-cars computer system. While she had no intentions of activating the car, she was hoping to use the computer systems to monitor the Cardassian activities and perhaps do some damage.

"I have accessed the computer system and there seems to be no damage whatsoever," C300 said. "I am sure you must have something in mind, President Daelan."

KaRae nodded and ducked into the car. "See if you can boost the capability of this system and tap into the central core of the city."

C300 cocked his head. "This is a rather...primitive system by comparison; I am not sure how much more I can increase the systems capability. It was designed to be an internal system to run the tram-car."

KaRae patted the Droid on his shoulder. "I know. Think of it as a challenge to your programming."

"A challenge!"

KaRae left the car and returned to the others.

C300, meanwhile, began to mumble to himself. "She certainly expects of lot of me doesn't she. A challenge to my programming? What do I look like an R-2 unit?"

<Unitram system between SGC and Engineering>

"Ok Here is the plan hopefully the system has been shut down as that’s in the emergency planning document, that being so we drop down into Engineering and try and see what useful kit we can acquire from there plus I hope they have an Emergency Field medical kit as I want a larger kit than the small belt kit I have on me.

After that its back up the track to the north east past the zoo, half way between the zoo and the Jedi Temple there is a secret access panel to one of the bunkers, we hit the bunker and hopefully a coupe of you SGC can take revenge on the tank that holed the wall at SGC and take that and any more convenient armour out.

After that retreat back to the bunker and follow the rest of us north to the Jedi Temple.

If the temple is clear we wait there for a bit, otherwise we move north and see what’s at the Knight Marine HQ, unless it’s completely abandoned and taken over we should be able to defend the KMHQ as it’s by itself and on a hill its equipped with tower guns and other defenses and is a fortified HQ position.

Any Questions."

<Outside Embassy Row Unitram station>

Mailee and her team of escapees were added to by refugees from some other embassy and they all made there way to the Unitram station.

Finding the shutters down and 5 Cardassians guarding it Mailee Drew the Cardassians into an ambush and the Storm troopers knocked out the guards.

Mailee then went up to the shutters and worked the lock using the force, the station was NOT locked up, as soon as Mailee realized this a young woman with shoulder length brown hair wearing black trousers and sweat shirt rushed up the stairs from the tracks and pointed a Disruptor at her for a second.

"Sorry Ambassador Loopa I heard the noise and wondered if the Cardassians were trying to take the Unitram system after all.

I am Mel Jones Vice president Drachir’s Private secretary here to lock down the other stations so we can use the Unitram tunnels as a safe haven" Mel Jones replied.

"Ok just let me call over some refugees and my Storm trooper guard so we can get in then seal the door afterwards" Mailee replied.

"Ok You had better hurry there were 5 guards outside a while ago" Mel replied.

Mailee turned round and waved her arm in a series of odd motions first the 5 Droideka created a wall in the direction of the embassy row and then the Troopers did likewise the other way.

Through the created corridor al Mailee’s rag tag band of refugees retreated into the station, finally the troops and Droideka followed.

After the last Droideka entered Mell began to seal the station down and Mailee’s robe fell open showing her Lightsaber.

Once the station was sealed and everyone was making there way down to the tracks Mell asked Mailee "Ambassador If I may be so bold Are you a Jedi".

Mailee laughed “A Jedi Master actually I suppose you noticed my Lightsaber Here have a look" And Mailee passed the lightsaber to Mel.

"Aren’t these a danger in untrained hands and few non Jedi can use them" Mell said handling it like it may blow up at any moment

"Indeed if someone was as bold as to try and USE it against me they would most probably do themselves more harm than me but I see you respect the Lightsaber.

now I can show you how it works hold it with the Republic seal end towards you and the opposite end in empty space for a bit and press the red stud near the far end"

Mell followed the instructions and the unique snap hiss sound almost made her drop the Lightsaber as it ignited and extended to full length with its standby lit humm.

"Ok press the stud again and give it back" Mailee then said, Mell did so and guided the people towards the track to the government HQ platform

Adam began to record all around him constantly watching out for Cardassians, Jem Hadar, or anything that would be trouble. He zoomed in on Darvin hugging close to a wall. Then as he pulled away he saw why...two huge tanks were moving in. Adam ducked down behind the shrubbery hoping not to be seen but like Darvin...wondering if that thing could pick up his life signs. If so, no point hiding anywhere.

He raised up slightly to get more images with his holocam. Although they were the enemy he couldn’t help but think how awesome the tank was. Such a good looking beast with serious firepower and defenses. A well built piece of military hardware. Adam had a friend who was in the marine core who told him endlessly about tanks and other marine equipment so after awhile of it being rammed down his throat he got a liking and an interest in it.

He continued to record watching Darvin closely while still watching out for trouble.

Darvin kept as still as she could till the two tanks had passed by. The Cardassians and Jem’Haddar had penetrated enmass into the heart of the city and that was not good.

“We cannot leave the doctor there. We have to rescue him,” Darvin said the Cranwell in a whisper.

Cranwell just kept shooting and quietly shaking in his boots.

Darvin knew there would only be a tiny window of opportunity and he had to take it. “Come on!” With the tanks barely clear of the Courtyard, Darvin dashed out along the front facade of the Medical Center and rushed to the front entrance where Doctor Tu’Rok still lay.

“All you all right?” Darvin asked as he gently tapped the Vulcan.

A slight moan was the response.

Darvin knew he could not carry the Vulcan alone so he looked back hoping the Cranwell followed. “Quickly. We haven’t much time.”

As Cranwell nervously approached, Darvin had to think quickly. Once they had the Doctor where would they take him?

The trio and the Jem' Hadar moved quickly to avoid further detection. Until then before they reached the corridor to Communications department, they caught up with several guards which then fired towards them.

They then moved and tried to outmaneuver them while Veronica returned fire and resulted two of the guards are incapacitated while a shot from the guards hit Veronica right on top of her right shoulder which rendered her to move out quickly while fresh blood rushing out little by little. The guards then pursued her and still firing...

She moved quickly to join the others but the pursuing guards opened fire again and again. But luckily she managed to avoid anymore injuries. It was then that she caught herself with a Breen officer coming from another direction. The officer was surprised but then tried to get a hold of Veronica before she could run again...

She tried to break free from the Breen officer, but the officer's hands were too strong. In these conditions, she managed to grab a hold on her rifle and fired it at the officer's knees and resulted the officer to collapse. Veronica took a moment's glance at the disabled officer and managed to get the officer's weapons, some credentials, and several pass cards.

She then quickly tried to run once more before the advancing guards reached her while she again opened fire trying to fend off the guards while she tried to move her shoulders but the pain is still too much for her.

Just after that, she managed to get back with the group and then tried to get to safety as soon as possible before any other guards pursued them. Luckily they're now outside the Communications department. Now it's the time to charge in, if she could do it...

As he approached the human female, the Cardassian, whose eyesight was far better than most humanoids except Vulcan’s and Romulans saw the phaser pointed at him and dove to side. The phaser beam hit him on the shoulder but thanks to his armor he was uninjured. As she stood and ran in what seemed like one awkward motions he lay there, letting her believe that he was dead just like the Glenn and the other soldier.

Stupid woman, not even making sure we are dead. As big as he was and as with as much armor as he was wearing there was so much noise from the approaching tanks that he was able to climb to his feet and follow her. He didn't care that the Glenn he had served for over a year was dead, he only thought was of the promotion he knew he would soon get by delivering this female to the Gul.

Watching her run he noticed that she was running toward a priority target, the Time Portal. He broke into a run, he couldn't allow her to get the attention of anyone inside. He reached her as she neared the Portal. He jumped at her and knocked her to the ground unconscious.

At times Thrud felt helpless being carried like a rag-doll by Ambassador Latrem. But the Asgard knew that this was no time for pride as both Latrem and Janeway had larger strides and could go much further faster. Of course, Thrud would have had the advantage normally if this had been on an Asgard world.

< Outside the Communications Center >

Thrud did not think this a wise move. “We cannot communicate as we would surely be detected. We must make our way to a ship…preferably an armed one.”

“We will never make it,” Janeway protested as she nursed her shoulders. “We can call for help.”

Thrud blinked. “We have the weapons of the Jem’Haddar soldiers and should get more. I may look weak but my mind is still strong.”

No one had time to debate the issue really.

“You and I are not strong enough to make such a trek, Ambassador, “Janeway said as she looked to Thomas for support and a suggestion.

< Unitram system just outside Government Buildings station >

Mailee and her team were guided down the track until they met with an obstacle.

KaRae was taking a few moments to rest with the others while C300 did his work on the tram car's computer system.

Mel Jones stepped onto the front of the Unitram cab and tried to access the cab using her codes being the vice presidents personal secretary

KaRae had placed her weapon on the floor beside her as she sat on one of the benches.

The panel failed to respond, possibly it couldn’t access her codes from the mainframe

"Ambassador Loopa I have a problem the train car isn’t recognizing my code” Mel said.

C300 was busy sorting through the various circuits and did not notice anything happening behind him outside the car.

"No Problem step back and Master Anna can access the carriage" Mailee said, Anna tried security codes with no luck so lit her lightsaber and punched through the door controls

C300 jumped out of his seat. "Oh, dear, oh me. We are under attack!"

The Door sprung open and Anna led the group through the car to the emergency release on the other door becoming visible out the window of the car

C300 began to flail his arms in the air. "Help, help!"

KaRae and the others heard the commotion. KaRae grabbed her weapon and jumped up.

The door opened and Anna laughed "Think I am a Cardassian do you” Anna said "Didn’t anyone look through the window”

The droid stood there for a moment. "Oh, it is you Master Anna. I was doing a job for President Daelan and was quite engrossed."

"What's wrong?" KaRae said as she approached.

C300 stepped aside. "We have company."

"Nothing Secretary Jones found us and lead us into the Unitram system I have master Loopa and 5 Storm troopers 3 Droideka and assorted refugees from embassy row with me" Anna replied

KaRae lowered her weapon and smiled. "Well glad to have some help Anna, Mailee."

"Ok Anna I can take things from here " Mailee replied and all the group exited the train about 60 assorted embassy staff of all races and the storm troopers aided the droids up the large step and back down again "I hope we do not have to do that to often as I would like to assemble at the Jedi Temple an area I think they would not go for and if they do possibly move north to the Knight marine Barracks after that I think that would also be Master Drachir’s plan" Mailee then said

KaRae gestured for C300 to return to his work. "See if you can continue."

"Oh, wonderful," the droid mumbled.

"Moving this number through the tunnels is not a good plan as trams cars will be stopped at the all the stations along the way between here and the Jedi temple. That's over three kilometers, “KaRae began.”After the Borg Assimilation, all of the sub stations were reinforced as shelters especially for this purpose. Now unless the Cardassians have lightsabers? We should be safe here for a while."

"Lightsabers no I do not think so any new force capable being and me and Drachir would have picked them up long ago but heavy weapons and cutting gear Yes and it is only a matter of time before they get wise to us being here and flush us out then we have little time to cut open cars in retreat and No back door out, that is my only concern" Mailee replied

" But we do have a way out," KaRae said. "The way we came in- through the seals.”It would be worse if we got trapped inside a tunnel half a mile from a station or exit hatch."

"To True but I do not like giving the Cardassians the initiative without a fight by sitting and waiting for them to come and this station will be the first one on my hit list if I was one of them" Mailee responded

KaRae looked Mailee squarely in the eyes. "That is if our defenses aren't doing their jobs. We have the best military in the galaxy. The Cardassians and their allies should be getting too busy to care about searching all the many kilometers of Unitram tunnels, especially when there are more worth while targets to go after."

"Well last time I looked the Cardassians were kind of having it all there own way where I could see they had the run of Embassy Row, and surely the President is a worthwhile target to capture you underestimate your own important if they capture you and Drachir the federation is finished

"Yes, that is true. But if we do not have faith in our last defenses that were inspired by the brutality of the Borg, then we are truly lost and there is no safe place." KaRae said.

"How’s this I get a small team of volunteers and see what there is to see and hopefully we can secure more of the Unitram net and find other refugees and make something of this" Mailee suggested

"That sounds fine to me," KaRae said.

"Ok Anna I would like You a Droideka and 2 Storm troopers to remain here and guard President Daelan I need 10 volunteers to go with me then " the remaining storm troopers stepped forward as did some Klingons and an Andorian whom were all kitted out with either Blaster Pistols from the storm troopers or Disruptors from any local weapons lockers

"Good luck, and don't worry." KaRae said.

With Cranwell’s help, Darvin supported the injured Vulcan and carried him off toward a small restaurant near the Security Complex that seemed to be untouched. Darvin wondered where the defenders of the city were, as it seemed on the surface that the Cardassians and Jem’Haddar were over running the place. Little did he know that great battles were being waged on the outskirts of the city.

The main entrance to the restaurant was locked, but Darvin didn’t care. That was a non target for the enemy he had to use.

“How are we going to get in?” Cranwell whispered.

Darvin began to move around to the side of the small building. “The service entrance.”

“Wouldn’t that be locked too?”

Darvin didn’t reply as he had to concentrate lest they drop the Doctor.

When they reached the service entrance, Darvin played his hunch and sure enough he had been right. Restaurants often received goods early in the day and the service entrance was closed but unlocked in the haste of the departure.

Darvin and Cranwell took the Doctor into the restaurant and then secured the door behind them. After finding a safe place to set Tu’Rok down, Darvin left the Vulcan in Cranwell’s charge and then put extra barricades near the doors and windows. Hopefully, they should be able to rest a while and take care of the Doctor while still being able to see what was going on outside.
